Jacob Barkman’s home was a well-known place on
the south bank of the Caddo River where the Military Road crossed that
stream. The ancient mound above is one of two that Barkman used as a
reviewing stand for his racetrack that encircled them. The second
mound was destroyed in the twentieth century. This scene was observed
by Choctaws and Chickasaws who traveled the Military Road from the
Caddo to Antoine Creek to the southwest.
