Lieutenant Edward Deas to General George Gibson
Encampment of Indians Near Memphis Tenne
26th October 1836
To General George Gibson
Commissary General of Subsistence
General,
I have the honour to state that the Party of
Indians which I have accompanied from Alabama arrived at this place
yesterday. The present encampment is about half a mile south of
Memphis & near the bank of the Mississippi & the first party that left
Taladega under my direction is also encamped about a quarter of a mile
to the south of us. Since I have had the honour to address you upon
this subject, nothing of particular importance in regard to the
removal had taken place until the arrival of the Parties in the
neighborhood of this place. There had been a good deal of delay at
this point, in consequence of the difficulty of crossing the
Mississippi and the impossibility of getting loaded wagons through the
Swamps between this place and White River. It has therefore been
determined to employ steam boats to convey the People with their
wagons and baggage to Rock Row on the White River near
the mouth of Cache and take the horses & ponies through by land with a
sufficient number of Indians to take care of them. Two of the
Five larger Parties that lately arrived at this place, have
already gone, & the Third is now about to start. The other
two parties that I have mentioned above will set out as soon as
the S’Boats return, & that which I accompany will be the last to leave
this place. I am unable to say at present how long it will be before
the last will set out, but of course the Emigrating Company are
endeavoring to get on with as little delay as possible. The Indians
thus far appear well satisfied with the arrangements that have been
made, and the agents of the company with whom I have been appointed
have shown every disposition to comply with the contract for the
removal. I shall continue to give constant information upon all
subjects of interest connected with the emigration. I have the honor,
to the General,
Very respectfully
Your Obedt. Servant,
Edw. Deas
Lieut, US Army &
Disbursing Agent in the Creek Emigration
